What Is Lipedema Reduction Surgery?

I have heard surgery for lipedema called a few different things; Lipedema Debulking, Liposuction for Lipedema, and Lipedema Reduction. No matter the name, the goal is to take out the diseased tissue to improve the patient’s quality of life.

There are multiple benefits to having reduction surgery including decreased pain, increased mobility, and improved quality of life. It is important to remember this surgery is NOT a cure for lipedema. Conservative management will need to be resumed after surgery to manage and maintain results.

There are surgeons who specialize in removing lipedema tissue with techniques that are different from regular liposuction. Specifics on the techniques vary from surgeon to surgeon. Many people will hear the word “liposuction” and assume it is the same as cosmetic surgery, however the techniques used can be different to break up any fibrosis and allow the Lipedema nodules in the tissue to be removed.

Lipedema Reduction Surgery is frequently done in phases. The thought process on this is to allow the patient to heal in between surgeries and decrease complications. The initial phase is a consultation with the surgeon for evaluation and assessment to provide an individualized treatment plan.
The sequence of the parts of the body that will be treated will be determined by your surgeon.

As with any surgery, there are complications. Choosing your surgeon should be an individual decision after doing your own research.
